A higher advertised wage does not automatically make another state a better place to work. Compare the actual offer, living costs and working conditions together. This page is a comparison guide, not a state-by-state groomer salary dataset.
Collect comparable offers
Choose locations where you would realistically live. Find current original job advertisements and confirm the vacancy with the employer. Record the date, responsibilities, schedule and full pay formula. Keep trainee roles separate from experienced and lead roles.
Avoid averaging incompatible figures. An hourly wage, maximum advertised commission income and business revenue describe different things. A small set of advertisements is not representative of every groomer in a state.
Record the costs of making the move
Use current housing and transport quotes for the area you would actually live in. Include moving costs, deposits, commuting and any equipment expenses. Model a quieter first period as well as the schedule you hope to have; ask the employer what is confirmed rather than assuming full bookings immediately.
Compare the work behind the pay
Ask about appointment mix, bathing support, cleaning and reception duties, breaks, weekends, benefits eligibility and tip policy. Clarify how all working time and any commission adjustments are treated. Obtain appropriate advice if the terms raise wage or classification questions.
Use a simple comparison sheet
For each offer, keep columns for source and date, role, paid hours, pay formula, uncertain components, employee costs, local living costs and unanswered questions. Do not fill missing details with a national estimate.
Official animal-care wage figures can provide broad context, but they do not isolate groomers or prove local rates. See the salary guide for that distinction.
Decide on a verified opportunity
There is no state ranking on this page because we do not have a current, representative groomer-only dataset to support one. Use the market-comparison guide and interview questions to evaluate the opportunities you can confirm before committing to a move.
