Why You Need a Portfolio

A portfolio is a living professional record. It shows how you approach different coats, services, and client goals, while giving you useful evidence to carry into introductions, interviews, and future career decisions.

Photography Essentials

Taking Great Photos

Lighting

  • Natural light is best - position near a window
  • Avoid harsh overhead lighting that creates shadows
  • Use a ring light or softbox for consistent results

Background

  • Use a clean, neutral backdrop (white, gray, or black)
  • Remove clutter and distractions
  • Portable backdrops are affordable and portable

Positioning

  • Shoot at the dog's eye level
  • Capture multiple angles: front, side profile, full body
  • Focus on the dog's face and expression

Before & After Photos

  • Take "before" photos at the same angle and lighting as "after"
  • Use the same dog, angle, crop, and lighting so the transformation is honest and easy to compare
  • Side-by-side comparisons are most effective
  • Ask client permission before using photos

What to Include in Your Portfolio

Variety of Breeds

Include popular breeds like poodles, doodles, terriers, and sporting dogs. Show you can work with different coat types and sizes.

Different Styles

Showcase breed-standard cuts, creative grooming, hand-scissoring, and Asian fusion if applicable.

Challenging Grooms

Share only permitted work within your training. Never prolong uncomfortable work or take on an unsuitable service for a photograph. Explain your role and any supervision honestly.

Detail Shots

Close-ups of ears, paws, face work, and scissor work show attention to detail.

Portfolio Organization

Digital Portfolio

  • A portfolio document or personal website with a curated selection of your work
  • Dedicated portfolio website (Wix, Squarespace)
  • Google Drive or Dropbox folder (shareable link)

Physical Portfolio

  • Professional photo album or binder
  • Organized by breed or style
  • Include brief notes about each groom

Building Your Online Presence

Social media is a powerful tool for showcasing your work and attracting opportunities:

  • Post Consistently: Share 2-3 grooms per week
  • Use Hashtags: #doggroomer #petgrooming #groomersofinstagram
  • Engage: Comment on other groomers' work, join grooming groups
  • Share Process: Time-lapse videos, before/after transformations

Make Every Groom Easy to Scan

A strong image earns attention; useful context helps someone understand the skill behind it. Add enough detail to make each groom searchable and meaningful without turning the caption into a résumé.

Name the service

Use a clear label such as teddy trim, hand-scissored finish, deshed, or breed-standard outline.

Add the grooming context

Include the breed or coat type, the client goal, and the technique you chose.

Show a useful range

Mix full finishes, matched before-and-after pairs, detail work, and specialties you want to keep doing.

Protect consent and trust

Ask permission before publishing, avoid personal client details, and only present work you completed.

Portfolio Don'ts

  • ❌Blurry or poorly lit photos
  • ❌Excessive filters that distort the grooming work
  • ❌Photos with people, kids, or other distractions
  • ❌Including work that isn't your best
  • ❌Using someone else's work as your own
